TIMCA is working in collaboration with the Rhodes University Numeracy Chair Project to improve mathematics education in South Africa. Prof Graven and her team have developed a comprehensive set of materials that are now ready to scale. TIMCA has been using these materials for some time, and has agreed to work with the Chair in rolling out the program in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Harrismith.
The collaboration brings together the strengths of both teams. The Chair is providing the use of its materials developed over the past decade, and Prof Graven is acting as an advisor to the project. She recently visited the TIMCA project in Harrismith to train TIMCA math club facilitators. TIMCA brings extensive skills in project management and the rolling out of initiatives in South African township communities.
To ensure the success of the rollout, the children on the program will be assessed regularly and feedback will be given to all of the project sponsors. This initiative will change the lives of thousands of children in some of South Africa’s poorest neighborhoods.
