ALL PHASES (Grade R to 6)
HOW CLOSE TO 100
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: work in pairs
Purpose: Multiplication, arrays and the distributive property
The objective is to fill up the grid efficiently, to get as close to 100 as possible.
BEE ARRAY
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Two or more working in pairs
Purpose: Arrays in different formats
The objective is to be the 1st learner to mark 3 or 4 hexagons in a line.
DOUBLES AND HALVES
Phase: Foundation (Grade R-3) & up
Number of learners: Individual work and then in a group
Purpose: Division and multiplication by 2.
The objective is to find numbers which are double or half of another number on a grid.
2,4 AND 8
Phase: Intermediate (Grade 4-6)
Number of learners: Two or more learners playing in pairs
Purpose: Learners practice their 2, 4 and 8 multiplication
The objective is to score the most points.
ALPHABET NUMBER WORDS
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Individual work or in pairs
Purpose: Addition and finding efficient strategies for adding series of numbers
The objective is to find as many words as possible, from a given list, that add up to EXACTLY 20, 30, 40 or 50.
NUMBER PATTERN INVESTIGATION
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Individual work
Purpose: Relationship between different multiplication
tables and what arrays are and how they can be useful for
multiplication
The objective is to skip count and complete grids in such a way as to see the relationships between different multiplication tables.
NAUGHTY THREE
Phase: Foundation (Grade R-3)
Number of learners: Working in pairs or groups of three
Purpose: Addition, skip counting in fives and introduction to arrays
The objective is to throw a pair of dice and get 5 points for every double accept for a double three which clears your score.
TOTAL THREE
Phase: Foundation (Grade R-3)
Number of learners: Two or more working in pairs
Purpose: Addition, subtraction and multiplication
The objective is to throw a pair of dice and add, subtract and multiply the numbers together as quickly as possible.
PUZZLE GRID
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Individually or working in pairs
Purpose: Addition and logical thinking
The objective is to replace the shapes with the correct number and add up the rows and columns in the table.
PYRAMID CARD GAME
Phase: Foundation (Grade R-3)
Number of learners: Two or more working in pairs
Purpose: The reciprocal nature between addition and subtraction
The objective is to find pairs that make up specific values of 10, 11, 12 and 13.
JOINING NUMBERS
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Many working in pairs
Purpose: Addition, logical thinking and teamwork.
The objective is to find the largest or smallest totals by adding a series of numbers in a table.
PATTERN WITH TINS OR BOTTLE TOPS
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Many grouped into pairs
Purpose: Multiplication, addition and team work.
The objective is to be the first to draw a beetle.
TOOTHPICK PATTERNS
Phase: Intermediate (Grade 4-6)
Number of learners: One or more
Purpose: Logical thinking, pattern matching and a pre-cursor to algebra.
The objective is to complete the next picture and work out how the 10th and the 100th pattern can be calculated.
MATH CROSS OUT GAME INTERMEDIATE PHASE
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: One or more
Purpose: Addition, multiplication and recognition of number patterns and team work.
The objective is to add or multiply numbers on two or three dice together and cross out the total on a sheet of paper.
FLIP OUT CARD GAME
Phase: Intermediate (Grade 4-6)
Number of learners: Two or more
Purpose: Addition
The objective is to add the most cards together in the allocated time.
ADD 3 CARDS GAME
Phase: Foundation (Grade 1)
Number of learners: Two or more working in pairs
Purpose: Addition
The objective is to be the first to add up 3 cards as they are turned over.
SALUTE CARD GAME
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Three or more working in groups of three
Purpose: Multiplication and division
The objective is to be the first to work out what card is on your head.
ADD 5 CARDS GAME
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Two or more working in pairs
Purpose: Addition and bonds of ten
The objective is to be the first to add up 5 cards as they are turned over.
ADDITION PUZZLE BOX
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: One or more
Purpose: Addition
The objective is to work out the missing numbers in the boxes.
BEETLE GAME INTERMEDIATE PHASE
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: Many grouped into pairs
Purpose: Multiplication, addition and team work.
The objective is to be the first to draw a beetle.
ROLL AND FILL ACTIVITY
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Individual work
Purpose: The role of the equal sign and the reciprical nature of addition and subtraction.
The objective is to make as many addition and subtraction sums as possible with the numbers on two dice.
MAKE 12 GAME
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Many grouped into pairs
Purpose: Addition strategies and team work.
The objective is to be the first to get three groups of three numbers that make up 12, in a row.
BEETLE GAME FOUNDATION PHASE
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Many grouped into pairs
Purpose: Addition and team work.
The objective is to be the first to draw a beetle.
MAKE 10 CARD GAME
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: Two or more
Purpose: Addition to 10 and memory.
The objective is to find two cards that make up 10 by turning cards over and remembering previous turns by learners.
MATH CROSS OUT GAME
Phase: Foundation (Gr R-3)
Number of learners: One or more
Purpose: Addition, recognition of number patterns and team work.
The objective is to add the numbers on two dice together and cross out the total on a sheet of paper.
MATH 24 GAME
Phase: Intermediate (Gr 4-6)
Number of learners: One or more
Purpose: Logical thinking with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The objective is to use all four numbers on the card to make up the number 24.
