It was a bright and blustery August afternoon in Uitenhage, as 22 volunteer educators arrived at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Science and Technology Centre.
Port Elizabeth, 1 August 2019. Noluntu Baart, a Senior Education Specialist at the Eastern Cape Education Department, has a vision for the children under her care. The Eastern Cape is one of the most poverty stricken areas in our country, but Noluntu has a dream for them,
“I want every child in all the schools in my district, to be in after school maths clubs.”
She recently completed her Masters Degree (cum laude) in Maths Education at Rhodes University and saw first hand how good maths clubs are in developing agency and numeracy in primary school children.
“We need to get every child and every parent playing the maths club games with one another throughout the country.” – Noluntu Baart.
There are over 10,000 children in her district and over 5 million primary school children in the country. Like her, we are tired of telling 97 out of every 100 children that we will not be able to help them. It’s time we gave all of them a chance.
South Africa needs people with passion and drive like Noluntu.
Together we can help her achieve her dream.
